Itinerary for the proposed school trip to Ireland

As we greatly enjoyed our trip to London last year, we want to repeat the awesome experience of travelling and globetrotting this year too, this time to Ireland.

But before starting our lesson plan in Ireland, it would be useful and productive to watch these two videos.

Below is our scheduled plan:

Wednesday, April 22^nd 2015

We´ll leave early in the morning (between 4 -5 a.m), as our plane takes off at 10.30 a.m.

We intend to arrive in Dublin in the afternoon of of April 22^nd. Soon after we arrive and settle into our hostel rooms , we will visit the nearest supermarket to get supplies. We will then start our first leisurely walk in this ‘fair’ city.

Our first destination is Usher´s Quay and Victoria Quay to reach PHOENIX PARK, which is located in the East side of the city. http://www.phoenixpark.ie/about/

After walking through the park, we will pass through Wolfe Tone Quay, Ellis Quay and Ormond Quay to have a look at The Millenium Bridge and the HA´PENNY BRIDGE. (Unil 1919, pedestrians had to pay one and a half pence to cross this bridge)

We will return to our hostel.

(After such a long and eventful day, some of you will no doubt look forward to going to bed early while others may prefer to stay up for a while in your rooms and talk about your experiences.)

Thursday April 23^rd

On Thursday April 23^rd morning, we will have breakfast at about 8 a. m. And by 9.30 a.m., we will begin the day by walking towards Bridge Street, and Cornmarket. After around 30-40 minutes, we will reach GUINNESS STOREHOUSE, where, besides getting to know the process of making beer, you can enjoy the amazing views of the city from the Gravity Bar on the seventh floor. http://www.guinness-storehouse.com/en/Inside.aspx

By 12 p.m., we are scheduled to visit the Viking Medieval Area (DUBLINIA). Here, you will learn a lot about Vikings and their legacy; you can even become a Viking yourself during this challenging visit. Here you can see three exhibitions: Viking Dublin, Medieval Dublin, and History Hunters exhibition. You can also climb up St. Michael´s Tower. http://www.dublinia.ie/index.html

We will have lunch in the big and colourful gardens of ST. PATRICK CATHEDRAL (depending on the weather, of course).

In the afternoon, we will have a look at DUBLIN CASTLE and its surroundings.

Then we will visit TRINITY COLLEGE, where we can examine the BOOK OF KELLS and walk through The LARGE ROOM, one of the most important Medieval libraries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Kells

After this, we can wander around Grafton Street to ‘meet’ the famous Molly Malone.

As this is a pedestrian area, you can see and hear lots of street artists and musicians while you stoll down it.

We will then return to the hostel for dinner.

Friday April 24^th

On Friday April 24^th morning, an excursion to WICKLOW has been scheduled. It´s one of the nearest counties to Dublin. It is also called the Garden of Ireland, or the Garden County. It has amazing scenery and views. The trip will take almost two hours. We´ll have to take one bus, or DART and the bus. The first one, from Dublin to Bray. The second one, from Bray to Powerscourt.

Finally, we will visit the most popular tourist attraction in this county: POWERSCOURT GARDENS. Powerscourt Estate is famous for its house and huge gardens. They occupy 19 hectares. The house was originally a castle, in the 13^th century, but it was rebuilt by a German architect in the 19^th century. Part of the house was destroyed in 1974, but it has been recently renovated (1996).

In the evening, as we are walking along, we will pass through Temple Bar towards Hard Rock Café, where we will have a soft drink or dinner. Here we can have a look at their collection of memorabilia. The Hard Rock Café closes at 10 p.m for us.

Another option can be just hang around the area and then have dinner at our hostel.

On Saturday 25^th

On Saturday 25^thwe will start our morning walk towards MERRION SQUARE to see the OSCAR WILDE MEMORIAL and the Georgian Quarter. As we walk along Merrion Square, we can look at the terraces of Georgian houses along the south side of the street till we reach Mount street, which ends at the church of ST. Stephen´s. We will stop at the gates of Government Buildings, where there is a courtyard with its fountain. After that we are scheduled to visit the NATIONAL MUSEUM , NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM AND the NATIONAL LIBRARY ( http://www.museum.ie/en/homepage.aspx ).

Close to the museum area is ST. STEPHEN´S GREEN, the ideal place in the area to have lunch.

If we have time enough, we might take the DART (there is no underground in Dublin) to visit some beautiful villages in the Atlantic Coast, such as Howth, Dun Laoghaire, or Bray.

Sunday 26^th

On Sunday 26^thwe will pack our luggage early in the morning, but we still have time for visiting the city and going shopping. We will start with a walk towards CUSTOM´S HOUSE, an important building related to the recent history of Ireland and its relation to the British Government. Next to it, we can view the FAMINE MEMORIAL monument, which no doubt will be an experience.

Soon after, we will go to O´Connell Street and Henry Street to enjoy some free time in the many shops there.

By one o´clock, we will take the bus to the airport (Aerfort Bhaile Átha Cliath). Our plane leaves at 4.25 p.m., and we are expected to arrive in Madrid about 8 p.m. on April. 26^th

School Trip to London: Proposed Schedule (23rd-27th April 2014)

FIRST DAY (23rd April)

We´ll leave La Bañeza at about 10 o´clock. We fly with Easyjet from Asturias airport and our flight is at 3 p.m. on 23^rd April. We are scheduled to arrive in London at 3. 50 pm. If you are thinking “What a short journey!”. The fact is that we are an hour ahead. The opposite will happen on our way back. The transfer from the Airport to our Hostel (Hyde Park view) will take about one hour (allowing for possible traffic jams).

After we arrive and settle down in our rooms, we will go out to find our way around, if the weather permits.

We will pass through:

Diana Memorial playground: This is an extremely popular London playground. Princess Diana loved children and this park was built so this legacy can always be enjoyed by them. http://golondon.about.com/od/londonwithchildren/fr/DianaMemorialPl ayground.htm
Perks Field: This is a private lawn beside Kensington Palace. It is used for football and archery competitions. It is also a landing field for the Royal Family´s helicopter.
Kensington Palace: This is a royal residence set in the royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It has been the residence of the British Royal Family since the 17^th century. It was the official residence of Diana, Princess of Wales, from 1981 until her death in 1997.
Hyde Park: This is one of the largest parks in London. It is contiguous with Kensington Gardens, although they remain technically separate. Here is a Hyde Park self guided walk:

SECOND DAY (24^th April)

We will take the tube at Queensway (central line towards Epping) and get off at the ninth stop (Bank) to visit the Central Bank of the U.K. You will come across 300 years of history here. Items from the Bank´s collection are displayed in this museum. After visiting the Bank of England, we will go through King William Street to meet the awesome Monument. Keep your cameras ready, because the most impressive views of the city are here. You can find more details on this website.

Back to the West, we will go towards Embankment (Circle line or District line towards Edgware) to visit the main landmarks of London:

The final part of the evening is still up in the air. We might stroll down the area or go to a musical if we can find a last minute special offer.

THIRD DAY (25^th April)

As usual, we will take the tube early in the morning (Central line again towards Epping, although we get off at Bank). After a short walk we will come to The Tower of London (This building was very important in the great fire, and in the history of England). Unfortunately we will not have time enough to go inside the Tower, but you can have a look here: http://www.hrp.org.uk/TowerOfLondon/

Then we will go over Tower Bridge, starting a long walk through The South Bank. Strolling down The South Bank is the most amazing walk in London, not only because many of the important landmarks are there (London Eye, Tate Modern…), but from this bank you can have a magnificent view of the North Bank and the impressive dimensions of this fabulous city. We will continue on our walk, and fifteen minutes later we will find Southwark Cathedral, built between 1220 and 1420. It is considered the first gothic church in London. http://cathedral.southwark.anglican.org/

Next stop: Shakespeare´s Globe Theatre. It is a rebuild of the original one, as it was burnt in 1613, during a performance of Henry V.

As you know a lot about Shakespeare, we will enjoy a guided visit with an exhibition included. You can watch this video about Shakespeare´s life. I´m sure you remember some of this :

After this visit, we will pass the Tate Modern and then cross the Millenium Bridge to meet St. Paul´s Cathedral.

In the afternoon, we will visit the British Museum. We will take the tube at St. Paul´s to get off at Holborn. Be ready here for a magical trip in time to far and wonderful places. You´ll be surrounded by mummies, sculptures, temples….. Don´t miss the great hall, by Norman Foster too: https://www.britishmuseum.org/

We´ll spend the evening strolling down China Town, Covent Garden, Picadilly Circus, Leicester Square and its Walk of Fame...You can look for your favourite actor´s hands here.

FOURTH DAY (26^th April)

This morning we will not take the Tube, as we will be visiting the Natural History Museum, we can go for an early walk through Hyde Park and the museums are just in front of us. In this museum you will be impressed by everything: you can see dinosaurs, whales, go into the Earth, do interactive activities in Attenborough Studio… It will be an endless list of fun intermingled with knowledge: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/

Since the Science Museum is just round the corner, we can also pay it a short visit. It is an interesting interactive museum, completely different from the previous one, but it is also worth a visit: http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/

After that we can have a look inside Harrods, just in case any of you have some pounds left. If we start saving now, we might be able to afford a pencil or a rubber there. If you have a look at this website you can have an idea: http://www.harrods.com/

If we have time, it would be interesting to go to Candem Town, a special market in the north part of the city. The prices are cheaper, but it is always very busy. If we do not go to Candem, we might go shopping in the City Centre (Oxford Street), but we will see how it goes.

Our trip will now be near its end. There are more places to visit, but it will be difficult within the limited time we have...

FIFTH DAY (27^th April)

We will have to get up early as it will be time to fly back home. The plane takes off from London Stansted at 11.30 a.m. We are supposed to arrive in Asturias at 14.25, to reach La Bañeza at about 17.30.
